October Treats

I recently saw this photo on pinterest:

Which comes from this blog.

Chris' Aunt makes something similar that are delicious-- so I thought I'd give this variation a try.

I started by laying out square pretzels onto a foil-wrapped baking sheet:
You'll notice I went with the "haphazard" method. Had my mom been helping, I'm sure the little squares would have been in perfect alignment!

Next, I unwrapped and placed a Hershey's Hug onto each pretzel:
See the pile of wrappers in the background?

This went into the oven (preheated at 350) for 4 minutes. The recipe said 3-5... so I figured I couldn't go wrong with 4!

When I opened the oven, they looked like this:
As you can tell, they didn't loose their shape! As you can't tell, they were a tiny bit shinier than before they went in. At first I thought I should put them in for longer, but a test on one of them assured me they were ready for the next step.

Which was to squish the candy corn pieces onto the hugs:
Once you apply a tiny amount of pressure, the hugs just fall into a nice chocolaty blob.

Then I patiently waited 10 minutes for the chocolate to harden. And it didn't. So I waited another 5. Then another 5. After 30 minutes I got a little impatient and put them to another part of the kitchen while I started something else. An hour later and they still weren't hard, so I got creative and put them in the refrigerator. After 15 minutes of that, they were ready to eat!

Verdict: Not bad. Not as good as Chris' Aunt's version (which I'll recreate and post here someday) but not awful. Truth be told, I love candy corn, and I'm not sure it needs to be paired with anything to make it better. It's amazing on it's own. And Hershey's Hugs are ok... but nothing beats milk chocolate...

Although I won't make them again, they were quite tasty... so I packaged them up and brought them to Baton Rouge this weekend (where I was helping to co-co-co-co-co-co-co-co-host Jojo's baby shower) (that's eight co-hostesses!):
I learned the tissue paper trick from my sister-in-law, Laura. When making and packaging up treats, don't just throw them into those plastic containers. Instead, put a little tissue paper down first. It makes it look cuter and more festive!

The Baton Rouge Krewe had the same verdict. Not bad... but not as good as Aunt Ann's original version... don't you want to know what that is?! Well, you'll have to sit tight... it'll be a few weeks, but I'll post that up here soon enough.

And if you want a more printable version of these treats... click through to the original blog that featured them, she wrote a paragraph that's much easier to print off and put in your kitchen than my photo-heavy version!
